Port Jefferson Hidden Gems
Social Media Video Project | Stony Brook University
“Port Jefferson Hidden Gems” is a short-form social media video project created to introduce Stony Brook University students to the nearby town of Port Jefferson and encourage exploration beyond campus. Although Port Jefferson offers historic landmarks, cultural venues, cafés, and study-friendly spaces, many students remain unaware of these opportunities.
The aim of the project was twofold:
✦ to explore and raise student awareness about Port Jefferson and its hidden gems, and
✦ to better understand what students already know about the town and whether they are aware of the university’s ongoing efforts to build stronger connections with the local community.
The project was based on interviews with students and conversations with university representatives, including members of the Student Activity and other departments, and Port Jefferson community representatives. These discussions highlighted that many students learn about Port Jefferson mainly through friends rather than through official university communication.
To translate these insights into engaging visual communication, the project resulted in three short-form videos designed for social media platforms. Each video highlights different aspects of the town, including its history, student perspectives, and transportation options connecting the university and Port Jefferson.
Through concise storytelling and visually engaging editing, the project demonstrates how short-form media can help strengthen the connection between university life and the surrounding community.
